Roaring Fork River

Flow: 920cfs/Aspen (Jaffe Park), 1230cfs Basalt, 2760cfs Glenwood Springs

Conditions: The river has reached peak runoff and is now rapidly decreasing. Water clarity has been superb and very fishable throughout its entirety (a true rarity for the time of year). Even below the Crystal River we’re seeing 2-3’ft of viz! Caddis and stoneflies dominate right now in the high water, and we’ll see the first green drake sightings in the next week or two. Fly selection can be varied and fairly basic currently as long as you’re fishing the soft/slow water which is often right up on the banks. The streamer bite has certainly picked up – color hasn’t mattered much as long as you’re fishing the soft and slow water. Good hatches have been seen most every evening with plenty of fish looking up. Picky fish might require a skated dry, though in the high water a dead-drift is often all that’s required (besides a laser-pointer cast in the willows). Nymph fishing catches a lot of fish too with beadheads, jigs, worms, caddis and stones all working. Green drake nymphs like 20Inchers or Poxybacks are fish-catchers prior to the drake hatch.
