Roaring Fork River
Flow: 532cfs/Aspen (Jaffe Park), 848cfs/Basalt, 1,670cfs/Glenwood Springs
Conditions: We’ll cut right to the chase – green drakes are hatching in numbers below Carbondale and the fishing has been good to sensational! Anglers should expect to find the river dropping and clearing quite rapidly here in the next two weeks. We’re in that transitional period where large attractor patterns will still pick-up plenty of fish but more and more fish are beginning to key in on smaller flies and pushing away from the banks. Nymphing has been solid using Rubberleg Stones and green drake imitations like 20Inchers and Crown Jewels. PMD and caddis imitations will become more effective as the water drops. Streamer fishing has been much improved as the fish are now frequently looking up. Look for the best fishing to take place along the lower river from Carbondale to Glenwood at this time of year. Wanna avoid the green drake crowds or staying up-valley? The river from Basalt to Carbondale has also been fishing quite well and is a bit more conducive to wading. Get in on the fishing now before the heat of August!
