Colorado River –
Flow: 1,230 cfs/Glenwood Springs
Conditions: The lower elevation waters of the Colorado River below Glenwood Springs annually kick-off our famous ‘Fifth-Season’ of fishing. It’s certainly a different year after all of last years weather events down here. Sure, the fishing has certainly been slower than what we were accustomed to but it’s not all doom and gloom. Daily hatches of midges are still being seen as are increasing numbers of BWOs. And guess what, anglers are still catching fish! Weather plays a big key to the fishing at this time of year. The ideal day is warmer and overcast which aids hatches and puts the fish more at ease. Nymphing the mornings and evenings have been fairly productive. Eggs, stoneflies and caddis larva are all viable attractor flies with smaller midge and BWO imitations as droppers. There can be times when fishing small flies exclusively can rule the day though. As we get closer to April you’ll also notice the size of the midges increases. It’s not uncommon for us to fish size 16-18 midge patterns. The fishing is just now getting good – enjoy it out there right now!
