Roaring Fork River
Flow: 160/Aspen, 517cfs/Basalt, 1,020cfs/Glenwood Springs
Conditions: Spring has sprung – water conditions are variable along the lower river below the Crystal River confluence. Warm weather speeds up runoff while cold spells will give us fishable windows. Above the Crystal, the river is seeing higher water but with a nice green, fishable color. Caddis and stoneflies are now the dominant insects. Worms, eggs, and other junk bugs will still fool plenty of fish right now too. Remember, as the river continues to rise in volume, fishing the “soft” water often trumps fly selection. Short and heavy rigs are often best. The upper river near Snowmass/Aspen is still seeing predominantly midges and BWOs in the way of hatches. Meanwhile the middle river gets the mix of leftover fifth-season hatches in addition to spring hatches of caddis and stones. The fishing has been solid in this stretch.
